Bell Tower Light Pollution on Halls Lake

Bell Canada recently constructed a cell tower to the north of Halls Lake which is fitted with both red and white flashing lights in accordance with federal government regulations. Unfortunately, these lights reflect off the surface of Halls Lake with surprising intensity and bounce directly into cottages on the south shore. This is a significant annoyance and is counter to our support for dark skies initiatives.

Contact has been made with Bell Canada and the company has promised to remedy the problem ASAP. Their first remedial effort will involve ensuring proper deflector installation on the white light, in particular. These deflectors are supposed to ensure that no light is directed below the horizon and available to reflect off any nearby lake surfaces.

Once the deflectors have been either installed or adjusted Bell will be back in touch to determine if the problem has been acceptably remedied or not. If anyone wants to discuss this matter with a member of the Board, please contact Terry Moore at 519-843-2317 or via email at ‘tmoore7031@gmail.com’.”
